Documented case study

Designing an offline Tamil–English billing workflow for retail and wholesale operations.

This anonymised case study documents the workflow rules and engineering decisions behind a requirement-specific Windows billing application without publishing private client identity or unsupported commercial outcomes.

Quick answer

What problem did the billing application solve?

The application brought retail billing, wholesale weight calculations, customer balances, payments, empty-box returns and different print formats into one offline Windows workflow with Tamil-first labels and English support.

  • Retail thermal and wholesale A4 print paths
  • Net weight calculated after box-weight deduction
  • Ledger entries for bills, payments and returns

Evidence boundary: The implementation details below describe delivered workflow capabilities. The client is not named, and no revenue, productivity or adoption figure is claimed without approved evidence.

Operational challenge

The business needed one application for retail and wholesale billing while continuing to work without an internet connection. The workflow also required product-specific quantities, weight calculations, customer balances and print layouts suitable for different transaction types.

Requirements that shaped the design

The interface used Tamil as the primary language with English shown where useful. Product categories included country chicken, broiler chicken and quail. Retail transactions required thermal printing, while wholesale bills required an A4 layout with a dot-matrix fallback.

Weight and return logic

Wholesale net weight followed a documented rule: net weight equals gross weight minus the number of boxes multiplied by the configured box weight. Empty-box returns and returned weight created ledger credits, allowing the balance to reflect operational returns instead of treating every adjustment as a payment.

Customer ledger and calculation controls

The ledger recorded opening pending amounts, bill debits, payment credits and return credits with a running balance. Customer-specific wholesale values could be used for calculations without printing them as the displayed rate when the business rule required that separation.

Desktop delivery and compatibility

The solution was packaged as an offline Windows desktop application with local SQLite storage, packaged fonts and printable previews. Compatibility work included offline assets and rendering adjustments for supported Windows installations.

Verified outcome and limits

The delivered workflow combined billing, customers, products, returns, payments, ledger, settings, reports and print preparation in one application. This case study does not claim a quantified financial result because no approved measurement was supplied.
